Ol Pantry’s Wreck

Ol Pantry was a funny guy, grin on his face, twinkle in his eye

The whole crew just loved him, and I can tell ya why

He’d always have a good story and not just about him takin’ all the glory

And one thing about him that I can say, he showed up on time every day

Well Pantry was a cowboy in every sense of the word

He’d just soon be startin’ a colt, or out with the herd

But every once in awhile he’d need a dime

And his wife would say you need a “real” job this time

And that is why he signed on here at the barn

So he could punch cows and still tell a yarn

He hadn’t worked here too long ,but he’d been around enough to know

That ol cows can be waspy, any place you go

The day of the wreck was like all the rest

We’d had lots of pound cows, not all of em the best

When the old rip hit the ring she was a blowin’ stuff out both ends

First she tried to kill Stump, then tried to kill him again

Joy got her weighed and gave us the nod

We let her go, she was sure on the prod

Stump gave out the yell “Heads up out back”

And before you knowed it she was on the attack

Well she was big and mean and nasty and yellar

And I knowed she get someone but I didn’t think it’d be that Pantry Fellar

She got him down, and hurt him bad

I don’t think that was the first cowboy she’d had

We all went out back to have a look see

There was a lot a jeepers creepers, and, and aw gees.

He’s a real tough hand, I’ll have that to say

All he told the EMT’s was “don’t cut those pants away”

Let’s get down to the truth, thar ain’t no other way

The Good Lord was a lookin over his shoulder that day

Now he lays up there in that hospital bed

And if it wasn’t for God he just might be dead

I don’t know just what to think but ”Pantry get well fast”

And get back here to the barn, and this time we’ll see,

Just how long ya last!!!!

Old Number Ten

The first calvers are done

Well, all but one

And the cows are all penned up close

Well it's been a wet spring

But now it's froze up again

And fresh snow has the ranch in a pose

With the moon this bright

You'd never know it was night

But the sun will be up shinin' soon

My eye's are mighty tired

But my heart is inspired

Cause number ten will calve by noon

It will be a big bull again

Because, well, it always has been

And I know she'll wean him off over seven

This is probably her last round

I'll have to take her to town

And I know she'll end up in cow heaven

Just thinking about God and Wishing

I’m not a poet, I can’t seem to rhythm

But the Spirit puts these thoughts in my mind all the time

Choring, midnight or driving to town

Here comes a thought, so I must write it down

When early in the morn with my heart still aglow

From having communion with the only God I know

I wander at his beauty compared to his sunrise

And how much I’ll enjoy the day I look into his eyes

I think about heaven and how beautiful it must be

Compared to the mountains the sky and the sea

For we know they are gorgeous to the eye and to the touch

I know heavens beauty will be more, but how much?

And by seeing the sparkle of dew,

Is it the same sparkle in Jesus’ eyes too?

There are times when I don’t understand

Just what it means to be in God’s great loving plan

But if I just give Him, His time, I’ll gradually see

How awesome and loving His plan is for me

Jesus died for me on the cross it is true

But not just for me, He also died for you

Please think about all He went through

The spitting, whipping the pain and guilt too

Then live pure, like he asks us to do

As I look out at my church family, Oh the ones that I love

I’ll pray to Jesus in heaven up above

Jesus Oh Jesus Please,

On the day we kneel before you

May we already have calluses upon our knees.

Through my Lords Great love,

Mike

This Old Cow

This old cow,  I’ve had for awhile

She’s black, but short & kinda outa style

She’s sure been a good cow for me

And today she just calved again

On the other side of that tree

What’s it worth for a calf to find a teat?

About six hundred in the fall

For him to find that first treat

Well her bag hangs low

And you good cowmen know

Just what I’m a goin to say

That no matter how hard he try’s

With it right before his eyes

He won’t find it anyway

I’ve watched for about an hour

With mamma still as a post

As this calf goes round & round

Looking for what he needs most

When he first finds it

Three of us will be content

The baby, mom and me

Cause that’s how I pay the rent

Now it’s been three hours

And he aint going to sunk

Got to get’em in the barn

That’s just my luck

Been across the pasture fourteen times

She’s lost her temper and

I’m about to loss mine

This old cow doesn’t seem to understand

That putting her in the chute is my main plan

I’ve got her in the barn, next comes the chute

How that get’s done, I don’t give a hoot

Good at milkin I’am not,

It’s hard to milk when their blowen snot

I ain’t no dairy man

And she ain’t no dairy cow

But we decided to get along somehow

She kicked me hard, bout broke my arm

Suddenly cowboyen just lost all its charm

But the calf’s eaten lunch,

And I got a hunch everything’s going to be OK

Praise to God, we got it done

Well, I guess it was just another day

Thanks,

Mike

Down on the Hardy

We’re down on the Hardy one more time

I’am on a good horse beside a good friend of mine

Its yearlings were after they’re mixed in the pie

With a hundred some old cows, maybe we’ll get’m this time

It’s our third try!!

Our second try I’ll never forget

We raced down those hills without regret

But them yearlings was smart they snuck back

Around and out through the water gap

Belly’s on the ground.

We’ll get’m  this time I have no doubt

Goin flying across that bottom quick as a shout

This time we’ll capture’em before they can turn about.

Jake’s been ranchin here since 97, him and Tom,

But Tom’s gone now, He’s went on up to heaven

Tom Hardy loved this place with all his heart

Now it’s Jake’s turn to get a fresh start

And try His hand at makin it go,

How he’s going to make it I’ll never know

But he’ll do anything he can to keep on top

Working night and day, without any stop.

There some history here that’s for shore

Goes way back to the days of the Civil War

Hardy’s Great Grandpa was killed on this ranch

Some boys came up from Missoura,

Never gave him a chance.

Let’s talk about now, cause now is when we live

The Lord decides the time, and He decides what to give

Like in the fall with the trees all aglow

Or the beauty of the new fallen snow

A new born calf, a hawk on the wing

Every time I’m on the Hardy I see it again

It’s Gods creation right before our eyes

And the Hardy lets us work with it

Every day of our lives!!

Thanks,

Mike
